Losing Weight Doesn’t Need to be a Struggle

I’ve done a million different diets: Weight Watchers, Atkins, Jenny Craig, Paleo, etc. Literally, all of them. I’m at a point in my life where I’ve never been in better shape than right now. My secret? Moderation. Weight is something I’ve struggled with my whole life. It wasn’t until I ran the Chicago Marathon did I care about what went in my mouth. Here are my tips for losing weight without “dieting” –

1. Go for organic, unprocessed foods 

I’ve found that regardless of what I eat I try to opt for organic, all-natural foods. What does “unprocessed” mean? Try to think of unprocessed as a food that either comes from the ground, a tree or an animal. Think borders of the grocery store. If it’s in a box or a can, check the ingredients. If you can’t pronounce all the ingredients then they’re not good for you.

2. Stay away from processed sugars, syrups and anything ending in “-ose”

It’s so important to check the ingredients on boxed and canned items to look for hidden sugars and artificial flavors. Being conscious of these ingredients and checking for them is an easy way to become aware of what you’re eating. These are never good ingredients. EVER. Stop eating them. Replace those sugars with something natural, such as a piece of fruit.

3. Don’t eliminate your favorites from your life

This is key to staying healthy and maintaining or losing weight. I love wine, I love rice, I love the occasional bagel and cream cheese spread. These things aren’t going to kill you as long as you eat them in moderation. Eat the bagel and cream cheese, but know how many calories you’re consuming and factor it into your overall day. Don’t eat the bagel and cream cheese in addition to a huge omelet, you have to pick your battles. If you’re going to eat those grains, such as rice or pasta, just understand how many calories are packed into a 1/4 or 1/2 cup. It’s quite a bit. Measuring out your food will help you moderate what you’re eating.

It’s taken me three years to lose over 20 pounds, but I was able to do it through eating in moderation. I’ve found that giving up things you love isn’t worth it, but learning how to consume those things correctly is key.
